What is the Countdown Timer?

A countdown timer counts down from a set duration and alerts you when it reaches zero. This one also runs the same timed session in reverse: switch the direction to Count up and the display climbs from 00:00 to the target before the alarm fires, which suits classrooms and workouts where elapsed time reads more naturally. A separate stopwatch mode counts up with no limit. All of it is useful for cooking, focus sessions, exam practice, presentations, anything timed. The browser-based version doesn't need an app and survives tab-switching by updating the page title.

How to use the Countdown Timer

  1. 1

    Pick a duration

Click a preset (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, or 60 minutes) or type a custom MM:SS into the inputs and hit Set. Choose Count down or Count up for the direction, or switch to Stopwatch mode for open-ended timing.

  2. 2

    Press play (or Space)

The timer starts. The page title updates with the remaining time so you can spot it from another tab. Visual progress ring animates around the time display.

  3. 3

    Add time on the fly

While running, hit + (or the + key) to add a minute. Useful when a meal needs 30 more seconds or a sprint deserves another minute.

  4. 4

    Hear the alarm and overtime

When zero hits, the chosen alarm plays, a browser notification fires, and the timer counts up in red so you know how late you are. Press R to reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the countdown timer?

Pick one of the 11 preset durations (1 to 60 minutes) or enter a custom MM:SS in the Quick Start panel. Hit play (or press Space) to start. The progress ring animates around the time display, and the page title shows the countdown so you can find it from another tab.

What alarm sounds are available?

Four, all generated in-browser with the Web Audio API: Digital (a triple beep at 700 Hz), Bell (a 440 Hz tone with exponential decay), Chime (a three-note ascending C-E-G chord), Soft (a low 300 Hz fade). There is also an Off setting for a completely silent finish; the browser notification and the red overtime display still tell you time is up. Click the Alarm button to switch and preview. Your choice persists across visits via localStorage.

Can the timer count up instead of down?

Yes, in two ways. For a timed session that reads upward, keep Countdown mode and switch the direction to Count up: the display climbs from 00:00 to your target and the alarm fires at the target, so a 2 minute count up timer behaves exactly like a 2 minute countdown apart from the direction. For open-ended timing with no target and no alarm, use the Stopwatch tab.

Can I use it as a stopwatch?

Yes. Toggle the Stopwatch tab at the top to switch to count-up mode. Press play; it counts up from zero with no upper limit. The progress ring rotates once per minute as a visual pulse, but there's no end alarm in stopwatch mode.

Does it work in fullscreen?

Yes. Press F or click the Fullscreen button to take the timer over the entire screen. The About section and other clutter hide automatically. Press F or Escape to exit. Useful for timed presentations, classroom exam timers, or kitchen displays.

What happens when the timer reaches zero?

Three things at once: the alarm sound plays, a browser notification fires (if you granted permission on the first visit), and the time display starts pulsing red. The timer also flips into overtime mode and counts upward in red, so you can see how long since it ended without resetting.

Can I add time while the timer is running?

Yes. Press + (the keyboard plus key) or click the + button next to the play control to add 60 seconds. This works only while the timer is running. When paused or idle, you can subtract a minute with - to make a quick adjustment.

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

Five: Space (play/pause), R (reset), F (fullscreen), + (add 1 minute while running), - (subtract 1 minute when paused). Shortcuts work as long as a text input isn't focused.

Are ambient sounds available?

Four: Rain (filtered brown noise), Wind (pink noise), White Noise, Brown Noise. All generated live in the browser via the Web Audio API. Volume is independent of the alarm and persists while the timer is paused or running.

Is the timer free, with no ads?

Yes. No ads, no signup, no premium tier, and no usage cap. The page is static, the timer logic runs entirely in your browser, and nothing about your session leaves your device.
